The American Association of Geographers (AAG) is a nonprofit organization focused on promoting the understanding, study, and significance of geography and related fields. Established on December 29, 1904, in Philadelphia, the AAG hosts an annual meeting for the geography community, which typically draws between 7,000 and 9,000 attendees. This year, the AAG Annual Meeting will take place from April 16-20, 2024, in Honolulu, Hawaii. We are excited to announce the active participation of members from the RED Lab at this year's conference, where they will present their research. The team includes Dr. Jen Henderson, Dr. Rodolfo Hernández, Megan S. Porter, Keely Patelski, Ben Dohan, and Tahmina Bintay Younos.

Below are the titles of their research and the names of the authors:

Recent RED Lab Publications

We are thrilled to share the news of two recent publications from our RED Lab members. The publication of "Expanding the Concept of Knowledge Transition through Social Science Research" in the prestigious Journal of American Meteorological Society, authored by Megan Porter, Dr. Jen Henderson, Dr. Rodolfo Hernández, and other dedicated RED Lab members is a contribution to our field. This publication reflects a  collective effort, highlighting the collaborative spirit within our laboratory. The inclusion of insights from our weather community collaborators further enriches the depth and significance of this work. The article delves into the expansive realm of knowledge transition through social science research, shedding light on innovative perspectives that promise to advance our understanding in the field.

Another recently published article in Mathematics, a peer-reviewed, open-access journal by MDP, is titled "University Campus as a Complex Pedestrian Dynamic Network: A Case Study of Walkability Patterns at Texas Tech University" which is authored by Gisou Salkhi, Dr. Rodolfo Hernández, and other authors. The article employs statistical mechanics to analyze walks on spatial graphs of the city of Lubbock, TX, and Texas Tech University (TTU) campus pedestrian network. The study assesses structural isolation, integration of graph nodes, accessibility, and navigability, providing insights into potential graph structural modifications influencing campus evolution. This interdisciplinary work involves collaboration between Land-Use Planning, Management, and Design (LPMD), Mathematics and Statistics, Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering, and the Department of Geosciences at Texas Tech University.

We look forward to more groundbreaking research and accomplishments from the RED Lab in the future.

RED Lab participates at Flash Flood and Intense Rainfall (FFaIR) Experiment venue

Jun 12, 2023

RED Lab's director, Jen Henderson, and Erik Nielsen (TAMU) presented "Compound Tornado and Flash Flood Hazards: What We Know & Still Need to Know" at the virtual venue "The 2023 Flash Flood and Intense Rainfall (FFaIR) Experiment". The activity is part of the HydroMeteorology Testbed at the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center.
The FFaIR Experiment brings together researchers, forecasters, academia, and developers to evaluate, test, and use experimental guidance to aid in the prediction of heavy rainfall and flash flooding.

The Department of Geosciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for a Ph.D. student to participate in an NOAA-funded research project starting Fall 2023. This grant investigates how bilingual and Spanish-speaking broadcast meteorologists address challenges in communicating complex, multi-hazard risk information in hurricanes and severe weather. All applications will be reviewed on Monday, June 19, 2023, with funding decisions made no later than July 15, 2023.
